In some cases, a differential can be identified by the number of cover bolts is has. Count the number of cover bolts on your differential to help identify which differential you have.

Cover Bolts
Some late model vehicles come with independent rear suspension. Check your rear housing to see what kind of suspension it has.

INDEPENDENT REAR: Left and right axles can move up and down independently of each other
Independent Rear Suspension

SOLID REAR: Has a solid housing
Solid Rear Suspension
Some differentials have a dropout which bolts to the front of the axle housing. Check your housing to see if it has a dropout on the front.

Dropout
Some differentials have a removable pinion support on the front of the housing. This can be helpful in narrowing down which differential you have. Take a look at the front of the housing and look for bolts that hold a removable pinion support in place.

Pinion Support
Checking your pinion nut size can be helpful in identifying your differential. To check the pinion nut size, the driveline must be disconnected from the pinion yoke. With the driveline disconnected, check the socket size that fits your pinion nut.

Pinion Nut Size
In some cases, a differential can be identified by the number of ring gear bolts it has. Ring gear bolts secure the ring gear to the carrier.

Ring Gear Bolts
Ring gear diameter can be a helpful way to identify which differential you have. The ring gear diameter is measured across the face of the gear. To obtain the ring gear diameter, simply place a tape measurer across the gear. This can be tricky if the ring gear & carrier are still in the housing.

Differentials are available with many different axle spline counts. If you have your axles removed, count the number of splines on the axle. It’s helpful to mark one of the splines with a marker when counting the number.

Some differentials come with different axle lug counts. Just check your wheels and count the number of axle studs or lugs to help narrow down your search.

Axle Lugs
Determining the float type of your differential can help narrow down your search. The float type is the method in which your axles are secured into the housing.

C-Clip – Axle is retained into the housing by clip inside the carrier. Axle shaft rides on a bearing that is pressed into the housing.
Axle Lugs

Bolt In – Axle is retained into the housing by a retaining plate. Axle bearing is pressed onto the axle shaft.
Axle Lugs

Full Float – Axle is bolted to an axle hub. The axle hub also houses the axle bearings and races. Axle shaft does not have a machined bearing surface.
Axle Lugs
Some axle shafts are specific to the type of brakes your vehicle has. If you are searching for axle shafts, please select the type of rear brakes your vehicle is equipped with.
Some late model vehicles come with Anti-Lock Brake systems. This can affect which parts are correct for your vehicle. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle is equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes.
Some late model vehicles come with Traction Control systems. This can affect which parts are correct for your vehicle. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle is equipped with a Traction Control system.
Some differentials are equipped with positractions which may be from an OEM of aftermarket manufacturer. These different posi units take different clutches which can have different characteristics such as the materials they are made out of or the number of tabs on the outside of the clutches. If you are looking for clutches for your posi unit, please choose from the options available to narrow your search down to the correct parts.
Some differentials are available with several different axle lengths. If you are searching for an axle shaft, please measure your axle using the diagram located below. This will help you identify the correct axle shaft for your vehicle.

AxleLength
Some axles can be identified by the lug pattern diameter of their axles. If you are searching for axles shafts for your vehicle, please check your lug pattern by measuring from the center of the axle to the center of one of the studs. Multiply the measurement by two (2) to find your lug pattern.

AxleLength
Some vehicles are equipped with different size brake pilots on their axles shafts. If you are searching for axle shafts for your vehicle, please check your hub diameter as shown in the photo. The hubs typically have a step on them. Be sure to measure the hub near the flange, as shown, to find the correct hub diameter.
AxleLength
Some vehicles are available with more than one bearing journal diameter. If you are searching for axle shafts, please measure the bearing journal diameter as indicated in the photo.

Bearing Diameter
Some front differentials have axle shafts which may have more than one u/joint size available. If you are searching for front axle shafts, please use the chart to measure your u/joint size to ensure the Diff Wizard™ returns the correct axles for your vehicle.

Diff Wizard RWD – Rear Wheel Drive
Rear wheel drive vehicles only possess a rear differential which drives the rear wheels.

4WD – Four Wheel Drive
Four wheel drive vehicles have both a front and a rear differential. The user has the ability to select whether only the rear wheels are driven or if all four wheels are driven.

AWD – All Wheel Drive
All wheel drive vehicles have both a front and a rear differential. Unlike a four wheel drive vehicle, all four wheels are driven at all times.
